Purpose

The purpose of this blog is to provide information in English from Japanese news media, focusing on the main themes being addressed in publications such as the Asahi Shinbun (朝日新聞) or Sekai (世界), to name two I read on a regular basis. Sekai, in particular, is an excellent source of information on topics of importance to the liberal intelligentsia in Japan.

It’s not possible to paraphrase every current affairs article, obviously, so I will be trying to pick on the major themes each month – and, to a certain extent will be choosing items that I personally find of interest. Sometimes my paraphrase will be very brief, at other times I may translate parts of the text verbatim.

Apart from curiosity about Japanese affairs and a desire to spread accurate knowledge about Japan to English speaking readers, I am motivated by a desire to improve my translation skills with half an eye to future career opportunities.
